This is the "official" blog site for all releases for canningpoverty.org. All press releases and public information will be posted to this site.

Hello, JoeUsers, it is I, Gideon. I created this blog site for all of the canningpoverty.org releases. I will be reposting some articles from *my* site onto here, as I am hoping to use this site for all external traffic related to canningpoverty.org. For those who don't know who we are, I am posting the basic information as follows:

Canning Poverty – A Proposal

In the wake of our recent circumstances, I have had many people emailing me asking “What can we do?” They want to help but are on fairly fixed incomes themselves. Well, I think I might have a way they can help that will cost nothing but their time (and a little outlay for the domain name registration).

The idea is canningpoverty.org. I have checked, and the domain name is, at the moment, available. We would set up coordinators in different communities to take donations and deliver them to the local recycling facility. The payment would be deposited in a paypal account for use by the organization.

What we would do

The money collected by canningpoverty.org would be used, after administration, towards the following:

*Relocation grants for families who have job offers in other areas but are unable to afford to move.

*Small business startup grants.

*”Urban homesteading” programs to encourage home ownership in the inner city.

*Emergency temporary relief.

*Other assistance as determined by a board of directors.

Structure

My goal is to have canningpoverty.org set up as a nonprofit, with the following board positions:

*Chairman – myself

*Secretary – someone with the organizational skills to handle the paperwork

*Treasurer – someone with money skills to handle the incoming donations

*Web designer – someone with computer knowledge who can assemble a webpage

*Media contact – all board members would meet with media, however, this person would organize all contacts to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Finally…

*There are 300 million people in the US. In my community, I receive approximately 1 and a half cents per can. If we received an average of 1 can per man woman and child in this country per year, that would be a $4.5 million/year operating budget. 1 can per man woman and child per month would be a $50 million/year operating budget. We would, of course, take other recyclables depending on what the centers in the community will accept, but the focus will initially be on aluminum cans.

There’s a strong potential here to make a difference.

For further information, you may contact me at: canningpoverty@yahoo.com. I will be posting more later.

signing off,

Gideon MacLeish

Excellent...I was going to suggest to you that we do this.

I'm going to set up a Paypal account for Canning Poverty tomorrow.  I'm also going to visit a couple of recycling centers in my area and see what they pay.

Once the web page is up and running, I'm going to make a one or 2 page 'mission statement', print it out, and take it to the base commander to see if she'll let me solicit for cans in the base newspaper.  The revenue from this place could be really quite large....keep your fingers crossed that she says yes!

yes...and in addition to the mission statement, we'll need to make some reproducible documents that can be posted around town, etc.

Since I still collect off the highway daily, once we get everything sorted out, I was thinking of having some shirts made...for PR purposes, and so that when I'm collecting (or, in the future, when other people are), and people see our shirts, they can bring out any cans they have for us.

dharma,

I also set up a canningpoverty@yahoo.com email address, to direct email so our personal emails don't have to be used. I'll change the PW shortly and give access to all on the board so that we can use it as the "stock" address until we can get personal ones for each of us.

I will be setting up a canningpoverty user group on yahoo! as well and tying it to the email address, and will send out invites...these will give us more places for publicity. Feel free to do the same on other groups and send out the invitations.

Yes, you definitely need an identity..... maybe that's where I can help here (being in Aussie-land, many of us wonder what we can do to help)

I dabble a bit in computer graphics, so let me see if I can come up with a few logo's you might like.....

I do like this idea, and hope it get's the exposure it deserves ..... and the recognition.

My thoughts are with you and yours, Gid, ...hope it turns out well.

eric,

For you in Australia, as well as those in India and England, if your area pays for aluminum cans, you can always have can drives there and recycle and contribute the proceeds via paypal. Otherwise, a thought I had was, as we become established, that we could eventually work with those of you who are there towards setting up a similar program in your area and directing funds towards your own country...it would be tres cool if somewhere down the road we could have an international reach, wouldn't it? Thank you for everything, though...also, another way to support will be to help promote the website once it's up and running (and I have a user group "canning poverty" set up on yahoo! now as well...it's under "Family & Home - Other"...I couldn't find the right category for it). The more exposure we can get in the more places, the quicker this will grow!

For the t-shirts (and other stuff), you could try cafepress.com or some other place that works in a similar fashion. I just bought something from the website today and blogged about it. You submit the design, they put it on the website and produce it as it sells. Part of the money goes to you. Can also make mugs and hats and other things. Probably would be more useful once the org gets on its feet and word of mouth makes people think about buying merchandise. I don't know what kind of costs are involved or if they are all handled by the sale of the goods as a commission, but it might be worth checking out.

If nothing else, you put up a design and some JU bloggers buy a couple t-shirts. It's something...

aww shucks ma'am, ....just doing my bit!

Gideon, this backpacker hostel keeps me busy most days, so I can't do the can drive thing. I will help wherever I can with the Grafix etc though. Hopefully someone else will jump on here and take the reins for the Aussie contingent.

chip,

EXCELLENT idea! It could have great fundraiser potential.

We also may want to set up an ebay user name for items to auction as fundraisers. I know we don't want to spread ourselves too thin, but again, there's the "advertising" element of selling on ebay as a fundraiser, especially as we're in the early stages.

The bonus of this idea is that it can feed directly into the paypal account since ebay owns paypal.

Gideon, don't hesitate to let me know what I can do to help out here in my neck of the woods. I believe you have my email, let me know if you need it again.

I sell on ebay...as a matter of fact, I have a box of clothes and stuff I was going to list on there or take to the thrift store anyway.  I'll be more than happy to see about setting up a user ID 'canning poverty' and selling under that...it'd be a good way to get some funds into the 'canning poverty' paypal account as well.  Of course, all the monies raised would go to the org (except the shipping charges)  I'd even pay for the ebay listing fees at first.  We can include a brief mission statement in the listing, and name-drop the web site and email address as well.....what d'ya think?  good idea?

excellent idea, dharma. Once we get flyers we can even drop a flyer in wih the shipment.

Yep, we can.  I'll price some flyers next week.....I can even draw a basic one up on my PC and take it to Kinkos and get some printed.

Ebay can be like a virtual rummage sale......
